Prisoner’s Dilemma

March 31st, 2008 dinautami
Two prisoners who the police know to have committed crime A, but whom they wish to convict of the more serious crime B, are held in separate cells and offered a deal:

1. The one who testifies implicating the other in crime B will go free, while the other will receive 3 years in prison     (the “sucker’s payoff”).

2. If they both testify against each other, each will receive two years.

3. If they both remain silent, they will both be convicted of crime A and serve one year.

What would you do if you were them? To defect seems to be the most rational choice isn’t it? But what if they meet again? Tit for Tat?

Wanna play the game? Wanna learn further about prisoners dillema? Wanna know what it has to do with ethics?

specialists please

There’s something special on CahAndong’s gathering last Friday. Pakdhe Mbilung, accompanied by his friend in bird lover community-Kutilang, visited us to discuss environment issues. I like talking to people who concern and have deep knowledge in one specific thing. Talking to these people often provide me with surprising facts and sometimes new insight.

Do you know that very old trees consume more O2 than CO2? That means forest aren’t always function effectively as lung of the world. Do you know that growing more trees isnt always prevent flood and landslide? How bout that ‘gurameh’-a fish- doesn’t speak Bahasa-I mean they’re not native Indonesia species?
I just did last night (Isn’t it amazing how much we don’t know? No wonder a wise men said that “The only thing I know is that I know nothing.”)

The last time I learned about trees and animals was in high school, a biology class, so it must be very basic and overly simplified (Remember before we enter college we were short of required to know everything-math,biology,physics,language,history,etc, like a walking encyclopedia, but never really know a thing?)

The balance between the number of generalist and specialist should be balance. I think our society need more specialists. I remember reading this in a GRE analytical essay sample:
“I can only research what I do because there are so many who have come before me to whom I can turn for basic knowledge. It is only because of each of the narrowly focussed individuals at each step that a full and true understanding of the complexities of life can be had. Each person can only hold enough knowledge to add one small rung to the ladder, but together we can climb to the moon.”

from Engineer to Educator

March 26th, 2008 dinautami

I am a bachelor of electrical engineering-educated to be a good engineer-uhm, kinda. However I am now a teacher-an educator if you might say-in a Faculty of Education instead of Faculty of Engineering. Weird ha?

Well, every professions has it’s own nature and in the process of metamorphose I learn new things I didn’t learn in college.

In college most of the time I learned and dealt with machines or computers, now I deal mostly with human - students. FYI, human is way lot more complicated. They have moods and emotions, they can protest and criticized, they can be sleepy, some of them are too excited while some are too ignorant, some of them are too diligent while some are too lazy-all you have to deal at the same time in a class.

There are user manuals telling you how to deal with them but unfortunately none are satisfactory since they’re all unique and you can’t treat them the same.

They can be annoying and you cant just shut them down, nor turn them off, but when they did something nice to you, it’s very rewarding :)

While in a machine input-process-output is most of the time predictable if it is well designed, it is not the case with your students. Besides you they also receive input from their parents, friends, boyfriend(s), mass media, internet, part time job-including blogging, etc. No matter how much you want it not to effect their performance, it will. Some students manage to be ‘a professional students’ though.

Ouw, one more thing, there are still debate of which matters most: process, output or outcome.

…and that is just a single aspect of “Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi”, which is education, research and community services. So help me God. Amin.

PS: Congratulation to FiKri, you’re officially one of us :)
